Modacare 300 mg is a wakefulness medication that is used to treat excessive sleepiness disorders containing the active ingredient Modafinil. It belongs to the class of medications called Central Nervous system stimulants and is primarily prescribed for Narcolepsy, Shift Worker Sleep Disorder and Obstructive Sleep apnea.

Unlike traditional amphetamine-based stimulants, Modafinil works through a distant mechanism of action that supports alertness with the same intensity of stimulation.

Composition:

Active Ingredient: Modafinil

Inactive ingredients:

  • Lactose Monohydrate
  • Microcrystalline cellulose
  • Croscarmellose sodium
  • Povidone
  • Magnesium stearate
  • Pregelatinized starch

Mechanism of action:

  • Blocks reuptake- Modafinil blocks the reuptake of Dopamine transporter (DAT), the hormone responsible for clearing dopamine out of the synaptic cleft.
  • Dopamine accumulates- Since the DAT is inhibited, there is higher build up of dopamine in the space between the neurons.
  • Receptors respond- There is increased dopamine availability that leads to stronger stimulation of postsynaptic dopamine receptors.
  • Alertness follows-  The net effect is heightened wakefulness and improved alertness

Uses:

Modacare 300 mg is used for:

  • Excessive sleep disorders like Narcolepsy, Shift worker Sleep Disorder and Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Depression
  • Fatigue related to certain medical conditions
  • Cognitive support in selected patients as directed by the physician

This medication should only be used for the condition that your physician has prescribed for.
